Beach Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous - Tour Facts

Barrenjoey Lighthouse

At the end of Palm Beach, the Barrenjoey Lighthouse is an icon of the Sydney Northern Beaches. After walking up a somewhat steep track, you are rewarded with spectacular views of Broken Bay, Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park and the coastline north of Sydney.

In 1868, two wooden lighthouses know as the Stewart Towers, were built at either end of Barrenjoey headland to guide ships in. The need for a more permanent light lead to the construction of the current lighthouse.

The Barrenjoey Lighthouse was the third light on the headland and was completed in 1881. It was built from sandstone quarried on site. The lighthouse, oil room and cottages are unique in that they remain in their original natural stone finish.

It was designed by James Barnet, the NSW Colonial Architect, and built for a cost of $13,695 plus $2,210 for the lamp. The light is at an elevation of 113m and can be seen to a distance of 19 nautical miles (35km) out to sea.

The tower is unpainted and built of the very aesthetic local sandstone.

In 1932, the Barrenjoey Lighthouse was converted to automatic operation with the installation of a acetylene gas apparatus.

Even though the acetylene gas apparatus was efficient, access to the tower for re-supply caused problems and in 1972 the light was converted to electric operation.

Palm Beach

Palm Beach, the jewel of the Northern Beaches, is the northernmost suburb of Sydney, less than an hours drive from CBD. Nestled on a landmark peninsula, it is blessed with a unique contrast of lush evergreen bushland and beaches of golden sand, enveloped by the pristine blue waters of the Pacific Ocean and the calm sailing paradise of Pittwater. A unique environmental awareness blending breathtaking views with quaint cottages and palatial homes, ensures that Palm Beach will forever enjoy a lifestyle of relaxed and casual affluence.

Palm Beach is one of the largest of Sydney's beaches, being approximately 2-3 km long along the Pacific Ocean shore. The peninsula is home to many of Sydney's wealthiest inhabitants, who appreciate the tranquil atmosphere and "convenient" isolation. Many affluent and famous people can also be found holidaying at Palm Beach in summer.
Palm Beach is sometimes colloquially referred to as 'Palmy'.

Palm Beach has a number of parks, beaches, and sporting areas, including part of the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, and the beach that gives the area its name. Palm Beach has a golf club, sailing club, surf school and two surf lifesaving clubs.

Home & Away: Summer Bay

Home and Away is an Australian soap opera that has been produced in Sydney by the Seven Network since July 1987. It premiered in January 1988 and is the second longest-running drama on Australian television, winning more than 30 Logie Awards.

The Bible Garden

The Bible Garden is a quiet, contemplative, Christian garden made up of a series of gently descending, intimate grassed terraces that lead down to a viewing area providing spectacular views. The pond contributes to its tranquility and provides a water habitat for biblical plants.

Located in the northern Sydney region containing a Bible and a biblical plaque in an attractively landscaped setting, Gerald Hercules Robinson established the Bible Garden in the 1960s. He believed that ‘The Garden and the view behind it provide a perfect example of the glory of God’s creation’.

The Bible Garden at Palm Beach has both an inclusive and distinctly Christian character:
• It welcomes people holding a wide range of world views, both visitors and supporters.

• The Garden includes distinctively Christian references: its naming as the ‘Bible Garden’; plants of the Bible with labels and biblical references; the plaque with Bible verses and references; the Bible centrally located in a weatherproof box; the inscribed ‘thank offering box’ and the wooden cross.

Surrounded by residential housing, the Bible Garden is the only place where the northerly, open, panoramic and iconic view of the full crescent of Palm Beach, Barrenjoey, Pittwater, the National parks and Central Coast can be enjoyed by the public.
