Resolutely Off the Beaten Track
Activity level: Moderate - Challenging
Start/finish: Resolute Picnic Area
Walk duration: Full day 9am departure, return approx 4pm
Distance: 12kms
Experience the bush, Aboriginal art, and northern harbour beaches found 50 minutes north of Sydney.
Set in the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, the walk starts on bush track taking you to Red Hands Cave where there is Aboriginal Rock art dating back 2,000 years. From here it is a short walk to West Head Lookout to take in the scenery of Hawkesbury River to Lion Island, across to Patonga, to Box Headland to the Barrenjoey headland.
From West Head, the bush track heads down hill to Resolute Beach. The beach looks across to Barrenjoey Headland, Clareville and to Pittwater. Here take some time to feel the tranquility of the open space, and recharge your reserves before commencing the walk again. From Resolute Beach the track ascends, passing another Aboriginal site of the Garigal people.
Next stop is Mackerel Beach, and to get there, it is a descent through the bush track, traversing some rocky outcrops. Keep focused as you may come across black bush wallabies; you will definitely hear the birdlife. Mackerel Beach is the lunch spot. It faces Pittwater and is backed by a lagoon, and has a small community of houses. Take time to wander the beach, visit the wharf, and wander the community.
From Mackerel Beach it is then a gradual bush climb back to the Resolute Picnic Grounds.
